A customized operating system built on top of the lightweight PuppyLinux 2.11 system.
The distro itself is essentially Puppy 2.11, but it comes with a range of helpful pre-installed software for kids to use, including TuxType2, TuxMath, GCompris, SuperTux, and TuxPaint. Additionally, I installed a couple of useful dotpup packages, such as Vnc with GUI (by Rarsa) and MU Translate Menu (by Mark Ulrich).
To support localization sounds of GCompris, I also installed libartsc.so.0. Although I can't recall the exact location of this on the web. You'll also find some attractive wallpapers at usr/share/backgrounds.
One nice touch of GioveLUG Educational is that it contains Italian translations, which is great if you're based in Italy, or if you want to use it as an opportunity to practice the language. With MU translation program, it's also really easy to translate the menus into Italian using the it.lng file found in the Localization forum.
Overall, I was impressed by GioveLUG Educational, which strikes a good balance between simplicity and having all the necessary tools for kids to learn. The pre-installed software covers a wide range of educational topics and the distro itself was quick to setup and install. I highly recommend it for anyone with kids who wants them to get started learning about free software.
