GSSMP is a GNOME-compatible music player.
One of the great features of GSSMP is that it remembers which file was playing when you exit the player. When you restart the player, it continues playing the same file from where it left off. In the future, there are plans to add multiple bookmarks that will be created automatically whenever a track stops playing for any reason.
GSSMP has been developed on Linux, but it should work with any operating system that supports the standard GNOME environment. Before installing GSSMP, be sure to have the following requirements: GTK+ version 2.2.x, gstreamer, gconf, and an mp3 plugin for mp3 playback.
To install GSSMP, the easiest way is to use a package created for your Linux distribution. Otherwise, you can use a binary tarball provided on the website. To run GSSMP, you will need to have GNOME and gstreamer installed, and you will also need gstreamer plugins for the music file formats you want the player to support.
If you want to play back mp3 files, but are okay with installing something that is not free software, you can install the Fluendo mp3 gstreamer plugin. On an Ubuntu system, enable the universe repository and type "sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3" to install it.
To run the binary tarball, download the latest version from the download page. Then, untar the file and run it using the commands "tar -xjf gssmp-*-bin.tar.bz2," "cd gssmp-*-bin/bin," and "./gssmp." Overall, GSSMP is a great music player for those who want something simple and efficient that works well with the GNOME desktop environment.
