Sourceinstall is software that manages and installs source packages. It is referred to as GNU Source Installer.
For experienced users, the sourceinstall software proves useful as it allows source installation centralization, tracks already installed packages and relevant files, checks installations for consistency, and permits the export and reuse of installation information. Additionally, the software offers an enhanced uninstallation process.
For novice yet enthusiastic users, the software provides an opportunity to build confidence with the command line, file system, traditional Unix commands, and standard source configuration and installation procedures and options.
The software is mainly targeted at Unix-like systems and is expected to work on most of them, with GNU/Linux being the primary focus. Any portability issues should be reported.
After installing `sourceinstall' itself, the install procedure involves surfing the web, browsing a CD, or any other resource to identify a desired source package which can be added using the installer.
