GTK-myscan is open-source software that serves as a GTK frontend for various scanner tools, making the scanning process more accessible and user-friendly.
For Debian/Ubuntu users and other Debian derivatives, installing GTK-myscan is effortless. Simply execute the install.sh as su or sudo by entering - '$ sudo ./install.sh.' Doing this will install the essential files on the system. The files installed include: gtk-myscan.README, uninstall.sh, gtk-myscan.png, gtk-myscan.desktop, and finally, gtk-myscan.
The installation script sets uninstall.sh and gtk-myscan as executable files. However, the script does not include multiple dependencies such as zenity, scanimage, convert, ps2pdf, pdftk, and sed. Running the GTK-myscan without these dependencies prompts the GTK-myscan software for installation of the lacking dependencies before one can run the script. Using the following command can install dependencies: '$ sudo apt-get install zenity imagemagick sane-utils gs-common sed.'
Unfortunately, support for other distributions is not yet available. However, upgrading GTK-myscan to a newer version is easy. There is no need to uninstall the previous version as the upgrade will replace the outdated files with new ones by default. The installed config and log-files are not overwritten.
To uninstall GTK-myscan, the user needs to run the uninstall script as su or sudo in /usr/local/share/doc/gtk-myscan/. The command is '$ cd /usr/local/share/doc/gtk-myscan/ $ sudo ./uninstall.sh.' This will remove all installed files, leaving only the config and log-file installed during the initial installation. For a complete removal, the user can delete the config and log-file by running '$ rm -r $HOME/.gtk-myscan/'.
In case of a new hardware installation of a scanner device, the user should remove the config-file and rerun GTK-myscan. Additionally, the software provides support for missing dependencies error (Error: msr001) and failing scanimage error (Error: msr002). With these features, GTK-myscan proves to be a must-have software on any computer system.
