GtkSort is a program that sorts text and binary files on disk efficiently. It is designed to handle large amounts of data with ease and speed.
One of the standout features of GtkSort is its ability to sort large data sets much faster than the standard sort utility of your operating system. You can sort by binary data or text data keys, and limit sorting to just twelve keys.
GtkSort supports Fixed Length Record (FLR) text or binary files with fixed size keys, as well as Variable Length Record (VLR) text files with delimited or fixed size keys. With the ability to use multiple processors and disks in parallel, you can perform ascending or descending sort of each key with ease.
GtkSort also provides a preview of the keys of the unsorted input and the sorted output, so you can ensure that everything is exactly as you want it. The software uses memory dynamically according to the limitations set by the user, and exploits CPU and file system specific characteristics such as the L2 cache size, the D cache size, and the disk I/O block size.
To use GtkSort, you'll need GTK+ version 2.6.x. The latest release includes the introduction of the gtksortgen utility, which is used in the test suite instead of Microsoft's SortGen. There's also been a 64 bit portability issue solved and some minor cosmetic changes made.
All in all, if you're looking for a fast, efficient, and customizable way to manage your text and binary files, GtkSort is an excellent choice.
