This software tracks the number of self-defense gun usage starting from January 1 of the current year.
On the back side of the widget, you'll find a scrollable window containing more detailed information about the data sources. Version 3.0 of the widget has been redesigned to be more compact, allowing for other widgets on your dashboard. However, it still expands when flipped over, so you can easily read the details.
The Gun Self-Defense Counter widget automatically resets on January 1 of each year. It's based on the groundbreaking study by criminologists Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, published in The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology in 1995. The study found that guns are used in self-defense approximately 2.5 million times per year, or once every 13 seconds. This means that guns are used to protect innocent lives about 60 times more often than they are used for violent crimes.
According to the study, handguns are involved in over 1.9 million of those self-defense cases. If you're interested in tracking this important information, the Gun Self-Defense Counter widget is an essential addition to your software library.
