Gusanos is an excellent software that serves as a clone of Liero. It offers a similar gaming experience as Liero, making it a great alternative for those who enjoyed the original game.
The gameplay is as close to Liero's as it can get, making hardcore Liero players feel right at home. For new players, the controls may take some getting used to, but practice makes perfect, and it's still an enjoyable experience.
Gusanos takes what Liero did well and makes it even better by incorporating modern graphics, audio, and networking capabilities. Additionally, it boasts a myriad of new features not found in the original game.
One of the standout features is its engine's full moddability. The engine works in a Quake-like fashion, so each mod lives in its folder without interfering with the core game files. Modding is possible at every level, from graphics to game logic. Hardcore modders get full power with the Lua scripting language. You can use the engine to create a whole new game ("Total Conversion") or just add some crazy inventive weapons.
To enjoy Gusanos, you will need some requirements, which include a GCC - C/C++ compiler (>= 3.4 – 3.3 won't do! Preferably 4.0), Allegro - Game library (>= 4.2.0), Boost - C++ libraries (>= 1.33 - You'll need libboost-filesystem and libboost-signals.), FMOD - Sound library (>= 3.74 - You can get it here), Zoidcom - Networking library (0.6.x get it here), SCons - A software construction tool, and re2c - A tool for generating fast C-based recognizers (or use 'scons no-parser=yes')." In my experience, re2c is mandatory, and if not included, compile errors may occur because one of the .h files was not generating correctly.
Overall, Gusanos is a great choice for gamers that enjoy fast-paced, action-packed gameplay. Its faithful recreation of Liero will please hardcore fans, while the engine's moddability allows for endless creative possibilities. Highly recommended!
