GVidChanger-minimal is a GTK application that enables seamless video resolution changes in X with minimal effort and in a fast manner.
One of the best things about gvidm is that it doesn't hog up your RAM, making it an ideal option to run from an application menu or a hotkey. Additionally, gvidm supports dual or multi-head displays, offering you a list of screens to choose the appropriate one for your needs.
You can also specify on the command line a mode to switch to immediately, or a list of modes to choose from, giving you more control and customization options. However, please note that gvidm cannot change the color depth since that requires restarting X. Moreover, any and all modes you want to appear must be defined in your XF86Config.
If you're running Xinerama, then you'll be pleased to know that gvidm supports multiple screen displays, including Xinerama. However, make sure that the configure script detects it and compiles in support for it. If gvidm only displays one list of resolutions when running Xinerama, it means that Xinerama wasn't detected, so try re-configuring and re-compiling it, telling it where your X libs (specifically libXinerama.a) are with the option.
It's worth noting that the XVidMode and/or XRandR extensions must be enabled for gvidm to run correctly. This release version of gvidm also comes with some new and improved features, such as adding support for GTK 2.0 and fixing build issues when xf86Parser.h isn't present. Overall, gvidm is a fantastic software that offers seamless and effortless video resolution changes in X.
