Hdup is a file system backup tool.
Hdup 2.0 can run and compile on all Unixes, but it does depend on Gnu tar for backups. In case of a customized build, glib-dev and Gnu Make are also required. While the program offers a better include/exclude mechanism and can recognize nobackup keywords in directories, limitations in the current stable version of Gnu tar imply that directory information may not be included in the archive. To solve this issue, a Gnu tar version > 1.3.25, preferably one of the newer stable releases (1.15.x or greater) is required, and a patching process can be followed.
The software boasts several key features that make it a favorable choice for backup programs. These include its simplicity, versatility, support for incremental backups, network backups with ssh, network restore with ssh, encrypted backups with mcrypt and gnupg, split-up archives called chunks, .nobackup files, and a flexible regular-expression-based include/exclude mechanism. Hdup is primarily designed to be run from cron.
The latest release brings many improvements to the table, including the separation of files specified with the "dir" keyword with NULLs in the filelist. Overall, Hdup 2.0 is a reliable and versatile backup program that ensures the safety and security of your data.
