INSD enables remote access to serial ports through TCP/IP.
The product is comprised of three parts: IVSD, INSD client, and INSD server. IVSD is a program emulator of serial ports up to 255 for the Windows 2000/XP operating systems. INSD client is a service which facilitates the exchange between IVSD and TCP/IP, while INSD server is a service that handles the exchange between a real serial port driver and TCP/IP.
Transport layers for INSD client and server handle two flows, incoming and outgoing. The client receives bytes that were previously transferred to all virtual ports and then transfers them to the server on the remote machine. The client also receives flows from the server and delivers them to IVSD. Parameters such as the IP address of the receiving server, port number, and the real serial port number on the receiver must be specified on the client for each port.
In turn, the server receives information from clients and transfers it to the specified ports. The server also transfers flow from specified ports to the client. TCP/IP provides overhead information about the condition of different signals on physical contacts of the serial port in addition to data flow.
Overall, INSD offers an effective solution to address the necessity for remote access when operating different facilities connected to a computer via serial port.
