iWebCal is a web service that permits sharing and observing iCal calendars on the internet.
The newest iteration of iWebCal, version 2.0, features an all-new graphics interface and logo, adding a fresh, modern aesthetic to the service. Additionally, the HTML has been entirely redone to take advantage of current CSS layout techniques, providing greater centralization of style and layout information, faster downloads, increased flexibility, easier-to-read code, and potentially greater portability. Users can also expect more event information, including attendees, location, URL, and better-formatted notes. Further, the window includes an event summary for swift reference.
For users wishing to run iWebCal on their own web server, setup is now incredibly more straightforward. Once the iWebCal source directory is placed on a web server, it should display a sample calendar. To showcase your calendar, all you need to do is edit config.inc, informing iWebCal of its location. A host of exciting new features has also made iWebCal more modular than ever before, with much of the functionality that was previously found in the sample index.php file now moved to a new iWebCal object. The HTML and CSS have also been rewritten to make it much easier to embed an instance of iWebCal in another page.
Additionally, version 2.0 of iWebCal provides better session storage protection, ensuring the platform does not overload your server disk space. The administrator can set limits on this storage space, mitigating the risk of overwhelming the server with simultaneous users.
Finally, version 2.0 of iWebCal has fixed a bug that previously caused popup-event-info.php to display an error rather than the requested content. A line has also been added to the main.inc, setting gc_probability, allowing for session cache files to be cleanly and frequently cleaned up.
In terms of requirements, users need only a browser for viewing calendars. Still, for publishing calendars, they will require iCal 1.0.2 or later, or another application that supports the vCalendar format, and a way to post the (.ics) file on the internet. Overall, iWebCal remains an outstanding Web-based service that provides a valuable solution for any users seeking to publish or view iCal calendars online.
