Jasciimovie is a Java-based software that lets you play ASCII movies, which are digitized videos converted to ASCII representations, directly in your web browser.
Before playing the ASCII movie, the movie files need to be compressed using "gzip -9", which saves a significant amount of space. To compile and use the software, you need to have JDK 1.1.x+ installed and in the path. You can compile it by typing "make" and test it by using a Java-capable browser to fire up the jasciimovie.html file.
Incorporating the applet in your webpage is explained in the jasciimovie.html file. Additionally, the software also has configurable parameters such as the filename, fontsize (usable are 8,10,12,14), a flag of the movies getting repeated at the end, the frame rate, and the colors. The program tries to center the ASCII movie within the applet.
During playback, a copyright message will be displayed for 2 seconds at the beginning. A sample movie, cfilm.txt.gz, is included with the software. You can look at the individual frames of the file by using "zless cfilm.txt.gz". Keep the image files(copyright.gif, stop.gif, back.gif, and pause.gif) in the same directory as the jasciimovie.html file.
Overall, Jasciimovie is an easy-to-use software with advanced configurable parameters that allow you to play ASCII movies in your web browser, making it a must-have tool for viewing these kinds of movies.
