Jesktop is a desktop system that is Java-based and compatible with various platforms.
The development of Jesktop began way back in November 2000, and its team is composed of experts who initially worked on William's Portable Java Environment (PJE) since early 2000. This project has several aims, including having a fully-functional Java desktop environment running on a functional Java-based operating system. This way, users can move seamlessly between host operating systems, or even use support in a BIOS layer, without the need to install a separate OS.
A single CD installation of Linux or any other Java-capable OS can also run NanoContainer, Jesktop, and many pre-configured Java applications, without any additional applications. The ultimate goal of Jesktop is to see its use and adoption widely by enthusiasts and deployed on network appliances and palm-sized devices, as long as there's enough support for J2SE. The appeal for manufacturers is obvious, as Jesktop offers a standard open-source OS layer that can safely support multiple applications.
Finally, Jesktop also aims to see thousands of GPL, MPL, SPL, Commercial, and other apps that can run seamlessly inside it. They will all be hot installable, reinstallable, and de-installable, without requiring any restarts or reboots. It's a game-changer for the Java-based computing world!
