Jabbercli is a non-graphical software for instant messaging.
To use Jig, you must first create a file named ~/.jigrc which contains specific information. This includes your JID (jabber ID) which is mandatory, and your password and incomingWav (an optional incoming message sound file). If you set a password, you will not be prompted for it during communications.
In terms of customizing the sound of incoming messages, Jig provides an option for you to add a specific .wav file that will play upon receiving a message. It supports any sound format that is hardcoded as a Signed 16 bit Little Endian (AFMT_S16_LE), and there's a sample sound file called 'beep-06.wav' included if you do not want to search for your own sound file.
Overall, Jig is an excellent choice for anyone who prefers a straightforward Jabber client without any cumbersome UI. To get started with Jig, simply create the necessary configuration file and run the 'jig.py' script.
