jPicEdt is a vector-based graphic editor that runs on multiple platforms and specifically designed for LaTeX and its associated packages. It supports popular packages like eepic and PsTricks.
With the epic/eepic, and PsTricks packages, users are provided with more commands, including shape-filling and coloring (with PsTricks), making it easier to render more complex shapes. One of the most significant benefits of using the picture environment is the ability to incorporate text with any LaTeX command allowed in LR mode, such as arrays or user-defined commands.
jPicEdt provides every graphical element allowed by picture environment commands, including lines, arrows, circles, and boxes, as well as emulated elements such as circles of any size, ellipses, arcs, and polygons. Nearly every object allowed by the epic/eepic packages, such as dashed lines, and filled (whitened, blackened, or shaded) ellipses or polygons, is also supported, with the use of this package being optional.
Starting from version 1.3.2, nearly every object in the pstricks.sty package is available, including filling with colors, hatches, textures, and setting various stroke parameters, rotating texts, and more. However, support for pst-node.sty and other related packages is either experimental or underway.
To use jPicEdt, users will need Java 1.4 or later. The latest version of jPicEdt includes new features such as new objects like extensible Bezier curves, smooth-polygons and interpolating curves, and circles/arcs drawn using three points lying on a contour. Additionally, new editing capabilities such as rotated text, sheared ellipses, a Bezier curve special editing tool, and PSTricks custom parameters are available. Finally, jPicEdt also includes a range of new BSH scripts, and a very comprehensive German translation, including on-line help.
Overall, jPicEdt is an excellent tool for anyone who wants to include simple or intricate drawings into LaTeX documents, and its many features make it highly versatile and highly recommended.
