Jtalk is a Jabber client software that emulates the old Unix Talk system interface.
Despite this, Jtalk provides key features for one-to-one and one-to-several chat using the Jabber and Jabber-over-TLS (= SSL) protocol support provided by the Loudmouth library. The client is also readline-based and supports UTF-8 terminals. However, it is necessary to have loudmouth and readline requirements installed for Jtalk to function.
After building, the user gets two binaries: jtalk_rl, the readline-based front-end, which should go into the PATH, and jtalkd, the connection-keeping program, which may be placed in the PATH or libexec directory. It is suggested to keep the manual.html too, and note that the ~/.jtalk directory must be created manually.
This release of Jtalk includes basic tracking of contacts' online/offline statuses, customizable prioritization of notifications, and zsh completion functions for interface enhancement. A critical bug in the log system that caused memory exhaustion was also corrected.
Overall, while Jtalk is not a full-featured Jabber client, it can be useful for those who prefer an interface similar to Unix Talk and only require base functionality for presence and messages.
