K-EncFS is a tool for using EncFS encryption utility. It simplifies encryption of your files with a graphical interface.
The application requires certain dependencies like python, python-qt3 (pyQt), and python-KDE (pyKDE) along with EncFS and its dependencies such as FUSE, RLog (C++ logging library), and OpenSSL. It has been tested with different versions of these dependencies like EncFS 1.2.4, 1.3.1, FUSE 2.6.1, RLog 1.3.6 and 1.3.7, and OpenSSL 0.9.6, 0.9.7, and 0.9.8.
Debian users need not download and compile anything as these utilities are already included in Debian. However, they must not remove the line inserting fuse from the file /etc/modules. Ubuntu users may use it from Dapper, but it hasn't been tested. Also, for openSuSE 10.2 users, they can simply install encfs with its dependencies and avoid removing the line inserting fuse from the file /etc/modules.
If you enter the wrong password, a short notification will appear in the Messages box. This is due to a bug in distribution packages. Therefore, we recommend users to do a comprehensive test before using this encryption utility.
In the latest release, K-EncFS starts automatically, if it's left on the system tray. Also, it allows the user to mount encrypted file systems during KDE startup to restore their works in the encrypted file system. However, it requires editing the startkde script.
Overall, K-EncFS is an essential utility that ensures data security and encryption. Its user-friendly UI and simple installation make it a must-have application.
