This software is a powerful WAP and SMS gateway that ensures quick and reliable mobile communication. With high performance capabilities, it enables efficient data transmission for businesses and organizations.
With Kannel, it is possible to implement services similar to the World Wide Web through WAP. Although it is often claimed that WAP brings the existing content of the Internet directly to the phone, this is not entirely true. There are technical and other problems with the traditional HTML pages that require fast connections, fast processors, large memories, big screens, audio output, and may require fairly efficient input mechanisms. These are features that are not supported by most portable phones. WAP comes in handy by defining a new markup language, WML, which is simpler and much more strictly defined than HTML. It also defines a scripting language, WMLScript, which all browsers are required to support.
Moreover, HTTP is too inefficient for wireless use. WAP defines a new protocol stack that is semantically equivalent but binary and compressed. This has the potential to reduce the protocol overhead to a few bytes per request, instead of up to hundreds of bytes. To make things simpler for both service providers and users of Kannel, a gateway is introduced between the phones and the servers that provide content. This gateway talks to the phone using the WAP protocol stack and translates the requests it receives to normal HTTP without compromising the content.
The Kannel WAP and SMS Gateway project is built with many features that further streamline its functionality, including compressing WML pages into a more compact form, saving bandwidth on air, and further reducing the phone's processing requirements. It also compiles WMLScript programs into a byte-code format, taking things even further.
