KANOTIX is a Live CD based on KNOPPIX technology, with a primary focus on pure Debian/sid integration. It is a Linux distribution that is highly customizable and user-friendly, making it a great choice for developers and users who need flexibility in their operating system.
Some features of KANOTIX include Kernel 2.6.11.11 with numerous patches, ACPI and DMA enabled by default, i586 optimization (not recommended for use with older CPUs!), Unionfs support, AVM Fritz!Card DSL support, Eagle USB DSL support, KDE 3.4.1, Captive 1.1.5, OpenOffice 1.9.104, ALSA 1.0.8, GRUB boot loader for CD start (perfect for rescue in command line mode), and a Memtest86+ Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool in the extra menu of the boot loader.
Boot KANOTIX from CD and enjoy Linux instantly. Some tools may request a root password, that you have to set using "sudo passwd" or use "su" in konsole. However, whenever you execute something with root permissions, it is advised that you know what you are doing. For web surfing over LAN, no root access is needed.
While trying to write to NTFS partitions via the standard NTFS driver that comes with the kernel, you should refrain. The support for writing in it is inadequate, and it could destroy the partition and data in the process. Instead, try using the new and improved Captive NTFS driver. For FAT partitions, enable write-access with the right mouse button.
You may not have the necessary permissions to modify Linux partitions, in which case you will need to switch to the root mode in konsole. A few links in the menu might not work due to Debian/sid packages being new and having minor issues, but you can always rely on new releases. Overall, KANOTIX is a fantastic piece of technology that simplifies Linux usage for everyone.
