Kat is a KDE software that indexes files for easy file management.
Developed entirely in C++ with Qt3, KDE, and KIO libraries, Kat utilizes the extensible kfile plugin architecture of KDE. This architecture ensures that new media managers can be easily created for emerging file formats. In fact, Kat is the first KDE application to use the new fulltext kfile plugins. Information retrieval is powered by the SQLite3 embedded database engine, ensuring reliable and efficient searches.
Kat supports a wide variety of document and image formats for fulltext search, including Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, and various image formats such as BMP, GIF, JPEG, and PNG. Users need to have libsqlite3-dev (3.2.1-1) and libpoppler-qt-dev (0.3.1) installed to ensure the application runs smoothly.
Installation is easy, simply run the make -f Makefile.cvs ./configure --prefix=/usr (or else...), make, and make install (root privileges required) commands.
Kat is always looking for developers (C++/QT3), KFile plugin developers, packagers, translators, testers, documentation writers, and web designers. The latest release includes several new features such as docbook fulltext search plugin, debian package fulltext search plugin, and R script meta data and fulltext search plugins.
Other improvements include fixed layout, updated GUI, fixed load config and exclude, improved inotify code, fixes for multibyte character encoding, the ability to insert properties for the catalog using multibyte characters, and the ability to index and search multibyte encoded documents. A new HTML plugin and auto-vacuum pragma in SQLite3 have also been introduced.
In summary, Kat is a powerful and reliable file indexing application for the KDE platform, delivering quick and accurate information retrieval from a wide variety of documents and media types.
