Katalog is a CD organizer that is seamlessly integrated into the Konqueror software.
With Katalog, you can search for files located on your drive, or removable media such as CDs, ZIP drives, and floppies. One of the greatest features of Katalog is that it saves data in a compressed XML file using gzip.
This outstanding software was initially written to port the KDE 1.x application kdiskcat to KDE 3.x. However, the part of the KDE API involved changed radically. Consequently, the developer of Katalog decided to write the software from scratch. In the first version, the graphics interface and features of kdiskcat were mimicked. The developer found two better alternatives: gtktalog and CdCat, and therefore, he ended up creating a brand-new Katalog that was fully integrated into the KDE.
To use Katalog, your system must have KDE at least 3.2 and Qt at least 3.1.
The recent release of Katalog makes migrating from an XML file format to a database quite simple. Currently, only SQLite3 has been tested, but the developer believes it is possible to use any other database supported by Qt. The old file format is still supported, and the import/export function is a work in progress.
Navigation through catalogs has been significantly simplified with the recent update. A katalog folder now appears in Konqueror sidebar in the services tab. From there, you can easily locate all catalogs and experimentally navigate through mimetypes. Furthermore, the catalog creation widget now has a progress bar with the option to stop current jobs.
Note that since this new version of Katalog installs numerous configuration files for konqueror, you may need to kill each running instance of it to enable all the functionalities. You can easily achieve this through a logoff/login procedure.
In summary, Katalog is an incredibly useful application that makes managing CDs and downloaded files much easier. The recent release has improved the software significantly, and the developer continues to work on making it even better.
