KDE3TO4, a set of modular bash scripts acts as a wizard to aid in the transition process from KDE3 to KDE4, making it simpler for users.
To use KDE3TO4, it's crucial to have two separate directories. Kubuntu already does this, but Fedora users will need to relocate their KDE3 directory ($HOME/.kde) to a different location (for instance, $HOME/.kde3) before installing KDE4. Fortunately, the wizard's modular design makes it easy to add support for any application. Ideally, application developers themselves will provide much of this support as they can recognize possible issues that may arise during the migration process.
However, regardless of the contributor's identity, the wizard will accept all good contributions into the main tree. The wizard takes care of integrating the support quickly, so the amount of work for each application is generally small.
KDE 4.x is required to run the wizard. In the latest release, the wizard now comes with support for migrating konqueror searchproviders, thanks to NhJm. Overall, KDE3TO4 is an essential tool for anyone who wants to upgrade their KDE3 settings to the latest KDE4 settings.
