Kio_fish is a software for KDE 2/3 that enables users to access and control remote files. It acts as a kioslave, providing an intuitive interface for managing remote data.
This client is a full implementation of the original version 0.0.2 protocol with two optional commands to extend it. Even if a real FISH server exists on the server side that doesn't comprehend the new commands, this ioslave will still work, albeit slower. Additionally, it provides complete shell metacharacter quoting on all arguments, which is necessary but missing from the specs. The extensions used in Kio_fish include append (APPEND command), copy (COPY command), lscount (LIST first prints the number of files to be listed), lslinks (LIST shows symlink information instead of information about link targets), and lsmime (LIST determines the MIME type on the server side).
Host key and password queries are handled through dialog boxes. This client's primary goal is to make remote directories function identically to local directories while maintaining the same level of comfort, albeit slower. The original posting from the mc mailing list archives is included below. If Perl is installed on the remote machine and in the default PATH, Kio_fish will use it to transfer a custom server script, which is much faster than shell-only mode and more predictable. The script is stored in a file called .fishsrv.pl in the working directory.
The new release of Kio_fish fixed the shell mode symlink display and made the Perl server compatible with 5.005. Overall, Kio_fish is a highly useful and user-friendly client that allows for convenient and easy remote file manipulation.
