KolourPaint: the user-friendly KDE paint program.
KolourPaint is a free, user-friendly paint program that aims to be conceptually simple to understand, offering functionality targeted towards an average user's level. The program is perfect for daily tasks like drawing diagrams, "finger painting," image manipulation, editing screenshots and photos, and applying effects. It's not an unusable monolithic program where simple tasks like drawing lines becomes nearly impossible.
The software is also not too simple that it lacks essential features, such as undo/redo commands. The significant difference between KolourPaint and most other "simple" UNIX paint programs is that KolourPaint works effectively. The product comparison page is available for more in-depth details about the application.
KolourPaint is an opensource C++ software that utilizes the Qt and KDE libraries. The program boasts several key features such as undo/redo support (10-500 levels of history depending on memory usage), tools with single key shortcuts for all tools. The tools include a brush, color eraser, color picker, connected lines (a.k.a. polyline), curve, ellipse, eraser, flood fill, line, pen, polygon, rectangle, rounded rectangle, spraycan, and text.

Additionally, the color similarity feature allows users to fill regions in dithered images and photos.
KolourPaint supports transparency, enabling users to draw transparent icons and logos on a checkerboard background. Moreover, all tools can draw in the "Transparent Colour." It also features image effects like autocrop/remove internal border, balance (brightness, contrast, gamma), clear, emboss, flatten, flip, invert (with a choice of channels), reduce colors, reduce to greyscale, resize, rotate, scale, set as image (crop), skew, smooth scale, soften and sharpen.
The software allows for close-up editing with zoom capabilities that range from 0.01x to 16x, a grid, and thumbnail. Lastly, KolourPaint features file operations such as open/save in all file formats provided by KImageIO (PNG, JPEG, BMP, ICO, PCX, TIFF, etc.) with preview, print, print preview, mail, and set as wallpaper. Overall, KolourPaint is a valuable software and offers an excellent user experience.
