A mixer control program for sound cards using OSS compatible drivers, KOssMixer allows for easy access to sound controls.
Most soundcards today feature DSPs that can be programmed by downloading software via the drivers. The sound card and mixer features, hence, depend on the software that's downloaded to the DSP. That's why updated drivers can add or remove sound card features.
Even though KOssMixer was specifically written for OSS, supporting ALSA drivers is possible when you enable OSS compatibility. You will find up-to-date information on setting this up here.
The KDE 2.2 written program is a replacement for kmix and has several hundred downloads within days. Bug reports from the first week of initial release were non-existent, and while the project is considered beta, it's fully functional. The developer has future plans of adding more features and always welcomes feedback and suggestions.
Some exciting new features in this release include the capability to hide/show individual controls, the ability to modify the displayed name of controls, and the fix of the app-closing problem where it was completely quitting. Quit now only work from quit menu entries.
Overall, KOssMixer is an excellent mixer control/program that works well for sound cards utilizing OSS compatible drivers. Its accessibility, compatibility, and versatility make it a worthy addition to any system.
