Lingo is a word puzzle game that challenges players to employ their vocabulary and logical reasoning abilities to succeed.
To start playing the game, simply load a valid word list and select "New Game" from the menu. A window with a 12 x 12 grid will pop up. Click within the grid to adjust the dimensions to your liking. The width of the grid determines the length of the key word, while the height decides the number of chances you get to identify the word.
If you're using the unregistered version of Lingo, the height and width of the grid will be restricted to 4 or 5. Select "OK" to confirm your settings. Lingo then randomly chooses a word and places its first letter in the grid. If the word has more than 6 letters, another letter from the beginning of the word will be revealed.
You will need to guess the key word from the letter that has already been placed in the grid. Type your word in the field below the grid and hit "Return". Your word will appear on the next available row, with some letters colored differently. These different colors indicate specific hints about the difference between your word and the key word. There are three possible hints:
- The letter is correctly placed
- The letter is incorrectly placed
- The letter is not part of the word
Use these hints to suggest another word, and continue in a similar fashion. If you are successful in identifying the key word, you'll score points based on its length and the number of attempts you made, and you'll proceed to another word. However, if you exceed the permitted number of attempts without recognizing the key word, the game will come to an end.
The restrictions of the game include the inability to change the grid dimensions and nag screens. Nevertheless, Lingo is a stimulating game that is well-suited for word game enthusiasts.
