Linguas OS is a completely free GNU/Linux operating system adapted for translators.
Version: 1.1Linguas OS is a completely free GNU/Linux operating system adapted for translators.
Operating System: Linux
Linguas OS was initiated by me, Anthony Baldwin. I started using Linux while working as an impoverished public school teacher in 2000. I have continued to use Linux as I have entered the translation industry, and now, with several years experience as a freelance translator, and running my own agency, I still use Linux. I save thousands of dollars a year by not having to purchase proprietary software licenses, and yet, I have all of the software I need to perform my work, including a CAT program, full office suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, HTML editing and databases, tools for manipulating .pdf files, and DTP, internet tools, dictionaries and thesaurus, tools for managing the financial end of the business, communications tools, image manipulation tools. I can manipulate all of the industry standard file formats, including all MSOffice files, image files, Adobe .pdf files, etc.
And, I even have games and music programs to amuse me while I work or take a break...And it's all legal, none of it pirated, and none of it cost me a red cent (or one of those oxidized green ones.) Additionally, Linux is not as vulnerable, or as often prey to, viruses, malware, spyware, and crashes, so, I spend more time working, and less time messing with my computer dealing with said issues. In fact, I have not had a virus or system crash or security breach on my computer in 8 years. I don't even have to reboot every time my computer is updated.
I wanted to pass this on to you, my colleagues in the industry.
Thus, Linguas OS was created for two purposes:
1) to demonstrate to professionals in the translation industry that they need not be enslaved to proprietary software vendors, rather, that they can use FOSS (Free Open Source Software) alternatives, and;
2) For translators already using Linux and FOSS tools, Linguas OS is an option that already includes the tools you are already using.
The Linguas OS system:
Linguas OS LiveCD is a complete GNU/Linux operating system that fits on a CDRom (only 412.1 MB), including Openoffice.org, a full-featured office suite, handling all major file formats (.doc, .ppt, .xls, .pdf), Omega T, a CAT software / translation memory program (using standard .tmx files), Evince (PDF reader), and other basic tools that I use on a daily basis for my translation work. It includes internet browsing and e-mail software. It's a lightweight system that includes everything you need for basic document translation work, and internet communications, but, in order to fit on one CD-Rom, doesn't include much else. It does not include multimedia software for viewing videos or listening to music or any games. (package list), however, if you choose to install it to your hardrive, such software, and thousands of other programs, including games, media programs, scientific applications, development tools, etc., etc., are easily added with a few mouse-clicks. Linguas OS is based on PCFluxboxOS.
The LiveCD can run from your CD drive, without affecting your current system. You can boot it from the CD drive, experiment with the tools Linguas OS offers, then, remove the CD and boot back to your current system without any affect to the data on your hard drive. Of course, if you really dig it, you have the option of installing it it to your hardrive, too. It will allow you to partition your hard drive so that you can install it without removing your current OS, after which, when booting your machine, you will have the option of booting to either system.
