Linux Multimedia Player is a compact OS based on Linux, designed for multimedia playback.
The software supports a wide range of multimedia files, including mpeg-I, mpeg-II, divx, wmv,qt-mov,real video for video, and mp3, wav, wma, ogg, real audio for audio. LiMP also offers auto-detection of sound cards, video cards, network cards, and partitions (ide, sata, scsi) and supports all the cards as of kernel 2.6.13.
LiMP is a complete tiny OS that offers a menu-driven option and requires no knowledge of Linux. The embedded image file is only 35 MB and provides a full multimedia experience. It can easily integrate into WINDOWS XP/2000/98/95 or in Linux boot loader or boot from a CD-ROM. The software runs only from memory, thus leaving the CD-ROM/DVD free for use.
LiMP is completely safe to use as it mounts the partitions (NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, REISERFS) and windows/linux shares in READ-ONLY mode. The software offers a computer shutdown schedule for bedtime listeners, supports viewing encrypted DVD's (Zone set DVD's), and users can set their favorite skin for xmms as the default so that it loads on startup.
The latest version of LiMP includes updated software, such as a kernel updated to 2.6.21.1, ALSA updated to 1.0.14rc, Idesk, a desktop program, Mplayer, conky, and openbox. Xdialog was also added, providing an even easier interface. Moreover, LiMP includes compressed cache to improve performance. The software runs a VNC server and can be accessed remotely from any VNC client.
