Longstop is a backup and archiving software powered by scripts and database backends. It is capable of storing data onto CD/DVD, while keeping track of archived files for easy retrieval in the future.
In the early days of small system computing, users resorted to copying their day's work onto floppy disks either after finishing their work or before starting it. However, this often resulted in a pile of disks that were rarely manually indexed, or in some cases, used a few disks that ended up overwriting the version of the file needed with the latest backup.
Floppy disks have become largely redundant with modern technology such as USB sticks and CD/DVDs. However, copying files to CD/DVDs is not always straightforward, particularly in the *NIX world. Longstop is a simple command line tool that solves this problem and tracks the files on various media through its robust database.
Originally, Longstop targeted archiving to CD/DVD media, but it has since evolved to do much more than that. The software is easy to install by extracting the Tar file and using the Build.PL and Build commands. Note that as there are no tests currently in place, the test option is not required. Longstop is presently installed in /usr/local.
Overall, Longstop is a reliable software tool that provides an easy and effective way to archive and back up multiple copies of files on various media.
