LOTRO Launcher is a Linux-compliant launcher that offers access to the MMORPGs Dungeons & Dragons Online and Lord of the Rings Online.
For decades, people all over the world have been captivated by the tales of Frodo and Sam's epic journey to Mount Doom, epic battles at the Hornburg (Helm's Deep), Pelennor Field's and the Black Gate or Mordor. And now, thanks to Turbine Inc., players have the opportunity to explore Middle Earth, from Bag End to the beauty of Rivendell.
However, if you've chosen Linux as your operating system, you may not be able to run the game's launcher using wine. But fear not, because the actual game works incredibly well under wine. With a few minor adjustments needed to wine's registry as well as the game's UserPreferences.ini file, you can get started right away. Detailed instructions on these adjustments can be found on the wine AppDB page for the Lord of the Rings Online.
To use the LOTRO Launcher, simply compile the LotROLinux executable using "./configure make". Some users may encounter error messages concerning different packages. In this case, a list of the required packages and the corresponding package to install via synaptic is provided. It may vary depending on whether or not you're using Ubuntu.
Installation is simple. For use with Lord of the Rings Online, place the LotROLinux.run and LotROLinux.ico files in the same directory as lotroclient.exe. For use with Dungeons & Dragons Online, place the LotROLinux.run and DDOLinux.ico files in the same directory as dndclient.exe. Once the files are in place, run LotROLinux.run using either "./LotROLinux.run" or "mono LotROLinux.run".
You can customize your wine settings via the "Settings → Options" menu. If "save these settings" is selected, your account name, language, and realm selection are saved when you successfully log in. However, your password is not saved for security reasons.
Finally, the GUI will attempt to show the latest news via the Gecko/Firefox renderer if it can access it. If it fails to do so, it will use the standard KHTML browser. Overall, the LOTRO Launcher is an excellent choice for Linux-based players looking to explore Middle Earth in Lord of the Rings Online or Dungeons & Dragons Online.
