Lubuntu is an Ubuntu-based operating system that features the lightweight LXDE desktop environment.
According to the developers, Xubuntu is commonly represented as a light weighted distribution however it fails to run efficiently on older hardware. As such, the creators of Lubuntu are targeting this software at devices with less than 256 MB of RAM.
Initially, this project was not widely recognized, but the LXDE project received an invitation from the founder of Ubuntu, Mark Shuttleworth, to become a self-maintained component of Ubuntu in February 2009. The project was managed by Mario Behling and included an official Ubuntu wiki page with a list of desired applications, packages, and components along with a unique project logo.
Overall, if you're in the market for a lightweight and efficient operating system for older hardware, Lubuntu offers an impressive solution.
