MadWifi is a software driver designed for wireless fidelity, also known as Wi-Fi, called Multiband Atheros Driver.
One of MadWifi's most notable features is the support for the Wireless Extensions API, which essentially allows users to configure their devices using common wireless tools such as ifconfig, iwconfig, and its friends. MadWifi is an excellent option for users who like to customize their wireless experience to their liking.
The driver provides various operational modes to choose from, including the Station mode, in which the device functions as a typical WLAN client station. The Access Point mode, which allows the device to act as an Access Point for other WLAN client stations. The Ad-hoc mode, which is a peer-to-peer WLAN without the need for an Access Point.
Other modes include the Ad-hoc Demo mode, an older, non-802.11 compliant, proprietary ad-hoc mode, the Monitor mode which enables users to "sniff" raw 802.11 frames, and the Wireless Distribution System mode, which can be used to create large wireless networks by linking various Access Points together.
MadWifi supports WEP and WPA/802.11i, and also provides support for 802.1x authentication in Access Point mode. The driver is compatible with most of the current Atheros WLAN chipsets, and user devices can easily function as a miniPCI or cardbus device.
The latest release of MadWifi fixes compilation for kernel 2.6.24 and introduces several new features, including support for a runtime-tunable number of VAPs, and a new rate control. MadWifi is yet to support USB devices.
All in all, MadWifi is an excellent driver that provides Atheros-based Wireless LAN devices with a seamless wireless experience. It is easy to configure and provides a reliable wireless connection between devices.
