MailRecon is a content control software that monitors network traffic to capture emails and checks them against a set of rules, saving suspicious messages. It is compatible with any OS and works with SMTP/POP3 software. It is similar to the FBI's Carnivore tool.
Captured messages are saved in Maildir, allowing them to be read in any mailreader, such as Outlook or through a browser via webmail (e.g. SquirrelMail). With MailRecon, users have several options available to them, including the ability to record all email traffic from their network to specific domains, capture employees' emails to HR depts of other companies and to job agencies, and capture messages with information related to a specific project beyond the group that is working on it. The tool can also create a group of confidential documents and capture messages that contain these documents as attachments.
MailRecon is capable of recording all email messages of new or untrusted employees. It also alerts users if a virus or trojan was downloaded via SMTP or POP3 from a third-party mailserver. Additionally, users have the option to count email bandwidth consumption for each user.
MailRecon has a flexible, open plugin-driven architecture that allows users with basic programming skills to easily add new features themselves, including the use of shell scripts as plugins. Overall, MailRecon is a powerful tool for controlling email content and maintaining confidentiality in any network.
