MailStore, written in Python, is a software solution for mail protocol proxying. It offers support for SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 protocols.
The primary goal of MailStore is to provide a centralized and real-time backup solution for organizations that use shared email hosting, without requiring any user intervention. As most of the hosting providers allow for only POP3-based access to email, MailStore comes as a reliable alternative. In shared hosting environments, there is usually a limited amount of space available which makes the backup process even more challenging. With MailStore, all email messages are readily available at the backup proxy server, eliminating the need for users to take up the responsibility of periodical backups.
Another significant advantage of using MailStore is the minimal administrator involvement required. It takes care of creating new maildirs for new domain/user combinations, and the administrators don't need to deal with additional configuration files whenever new users are added to the system. The system is built in Python and has been tested with Python 2.3 and 2.4. Therefore, any system that supports Python 2.3/ Python 2.4 should be able to run MailStore smoothly.
Lastly, to access the backed-up emails, users can run a local IMAP server that provides them with access to their email messages. Users can then add this account to their email client and backup all email out of it locally. For example, in Outlook, users can export all emails in the account, import them back into their original account, and continue using them as before. With MailStore, all emails sent or received by users are always available for backup, ensuring that the system always has current data. Overall, MailStore is an exceptional solution for organizations that require a reliable and automatic email backup process.
