This software is an Open Source platform designed to create internet applications with spatial capabilities. It is an environment specifically crafted for software development.
The best part about MapServer is that it enables you to create "geographic image maps" that are customized to direct users to desired content. For instance, the Minnesota DNR Recreation Compass offers over 10,000 webpages, reports, and maps via only one application. It also serves as a "map engine" for the rest of the site, creating spatial context wherever needed.
Originally developed by the University of Minnesota's (UMN) ForNet project in cooperation with NASA and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR), the MapServer project is currently hosted by TerraSIP project, a collaboration between UMN and a group of land management interests, sponsored by NASA.
As of today, about 20 developers from around the globe are keeping it maintained, while a wide range of organizations and establishments sponsor its progress and maintenance. All this makes MapServer a spectacular choice for building spatially-based applications.
