The OpenTrad consortium, led by Eleka Ingeniaritza Linguistikoa, is responsible for the development of the Matxin architecture. The project, known as "Open Source Machine Translation for the Romance languages of Spain," has been funded by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce of Spain via PROFIT grant numbers FIT340101-2004-3 and FIT340001-2005-2.
The University of the Basque Country's Ixa research group is responsible for the development of the Matxin architecture, while Elhuyar R&D and Ixa are jointly responsible for the development of linguistic data for translating from Spanish into Basque using Matxin.
