Mesk is a user-friendly media player built for GTK+ software framework. It allows users to play various media files with its convenient interface.
Mesk also provides a range of playlist functionality. Users can enjoy shuffle, repeat, and queueing options to stack up songs in their preferred sequence. With drag-and-drop support for adding new files and reordering rows, users can customize their playlists easily. Mesk also provides a saved playlist feature that includes the state of the playlist (including shuffle, queue, and current status).
The two window modes available in Mesk are normal and compact. A standout feature of the software is the display of album cover art. Mesk will display album cover art if it finds the image file in the same directory as the audio file.
Users can search their playlists with the built-in search function. The search function is opened with the slash key "/" and closed with the escape key "Esc". Mesk's plugin API is easy to navigate and includes several plugins including the popular Audioscrobbler (last.fm) plugin with queue-file support, and a Gajim (a Gtk+ Jabber client) status plugin. Users can manage plugins through the preferences window.
Mesk provides internationalization support, including a Spanish (es) Babelfish translation, although the software may require some work in that regard.
Requirements for using Mesk are eyeD3 0.6.10, Gst-Python 0.8.2, GStreamer 0.8.10, and PyGTK 2.4.1.
Recent updates to the software include new playlist keybindings for "Q," which adds tracks to the front of the playlist queue. The new keybinding "Alt+q" clears the playlist queue. The software also now caches album covers fetched from Amazon, and relative paths in playlist URIs are now supported. The software has also resolved compatibility issues with Gajim DBus service by talking directly with it, rather than communicating through the shell. The user's playlist name is now exported correctly.
