MicroSieve is a USENET news spam filter with high speed capability, manufactured by Microbrew.
As a Microbrew product, the software is released under the GNU General Public License. Given the significant amount of spam circulating major news systems, it is essential to have a reliable spam filter that is both fast and effective. MicroSieve achieves an impressive speed of 5000 articles per minute while using only 2% - 10% CPU load (tested with Sun Ultra Enterprise 2 with one 300MHz CPU).
MicroSieve filters spam using a variety of techniques such as rejecting large articles, eliminating spambots, and only allowing binaries in binary groups. It also allows you to set up auto-accept keyed on the pathway header and auto-reject based on a path header to avoid filtering previously filtered articles.
Moreover, MicroSieve filters out duplicate articles using a custom data-dependent hashing algorithm and sets a limit on the number of newsgroups an article can be posted to. The software also enables administrators to use their own filters without having to modify the code of MicroSieve.
In this release, there were no changes to the 0.3.1 Beta code, there was only extensive testing, and some old documentation was updated.
