A set of Unix-based tools that were not created three decades ago, now available for free.
Some of the key tools included in the moreutils collection are sponge, which lets you soak up standard input and write it to a file; ifdata, which makes it easy to get network interface info without having to parse ifconfig output; ifne, which runs a program only if the standard input is not empty; vidir, which lets you edit a directory in your text editor; and vipe, which allows you to insert a text editor into a pipe.
In addition to these powerful tools, moreutils includes a number of other useful utilities, such as ts, which timestamps standard input; combine, which lets you combine the lines in two files using boolean operations; pee, which allows you to tee standard input to pipes; and zrun, which automatically uncompresses arguments to a command.
Other helpful tools included in the moreutils collection are mispipe, which lets you pipe two commands together and returns the exit status of the first; isutf8, which checks whether a file or standard input is UTF-8; and lckdo, which lets you execute a program with a lock held.
Overall, moreutils is an incredibly powerful collection of UNIX tools that should be in every system administrator's toolkit. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just getting started with UNIX, this collection has everything you need to take your workflow to the next level.
