Mortal Kombat is a fighting game developed by Midway Games in 1992, being the first entry in the series. Acclaim Entertainment later released the home version. Its content was highly controversial due to its violent and graphic nature.
The storyline of Mortal Kombat revolves around the first Mortal Kombat tournament, where the Buddha monk Liu Kang emerges as the champion who defeats the evil Shang Tsung. Ed Boon and John Tobias, the creators of the game, initially envisioned creating a video game featuring a digitized version of the iconic action star Jean-Claude Van Damme fighting villains. However, Van Damme was already in negotiations with another video game company, and their plan could not take shape.
To continue their quest to make a martial arts-based video game, Boon and Tobias loosely based their efforts on 'Enter the Dragon' with the character of Johnny Cage inspired by Van Damme. Cage, a Caucasian Hollywood martial arts movie star, executes a split punch to the groin in emulation of a scene from Bloodsport. Mortal Kombat warrants attention as an excellent game to immerse yourself into for a truly memorable fighting game experience.
