MoviX is a Linux console distro designed for multimedia playback with a small yet powerful feature set.
MoviX was created to tackle two different issues that arose from eMoviX. The first problem was that eMoviX does not support DVD playback because vob files take up too much space on a 700MB eMoviX CD. Secondly, people who already have a large collection of multimedia CDs would not want to go through the process of "eMoviX-ing" all of them. MoviX solves these problems by not being made to be embedded in a CD with the movie but instead to be loaded onto a PC, transforming it into a true MultiMedia Box. After that transformation takes place, you can extract the MoviX CD from your CD/DVD-ROM and insert any DVD/VCD/CD you have around to play.
It's important to note that MoviX is not an "improved" version of eMoviX nor is it a replacement for it. The philosophy behind MoviX is completely different, with the mplayer binary compiled with different options and used for different purposes. Despite the difference in purpose, the names of both applications are similar because they are both related to Unix and movies.
