MPEG4IP is a software that enables streaming multimedia exploration through its all-in-one system.
Included in this package are live MPEG-4/H.261/MPEG-2/H.263 MP3/AAC/AMR broadcasters and file recorders, as well as command line utilities such as an MP4 file creator and hinter. Plus, there's a player that can both stream and playback from local files.
One thing to keep in mind is that development for MPEG4IP is focused on the Linux platform, though it has been ported to Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, BSD/OS and Mac OS X. Additionally, many of the included packages are multi-platform already. However, Mp4live is only compatible with Linux.
This software is not intended for end users and does not contain executables. Before using, make sure to read the legal information to determine if it's suitable for you.
In terms of file formats, MPEG4IP supports avi, mp4, limited .mov, .mpg (transport and program streams), .wav, raw aac, raw mp3, raw mp4v, and raw .h264. Video codecs supported include mpeg-4 (xvid, xvid-1.0, ISO reference), mpeg1/2 (libmpeg3, mpeg2dec), H.261, and YUV (i420 raw). Through ffmpeg, users can access h.263, Sorenson, some MJPEG, and H.264 codecs.
Audio Codecs supported by MPEG4IP include aac (faad, faad2 with separate download), mp3, celp, ac3 (with separate download), raw PCM, and G.711 alaw and ulaw. Through ffmpeg, users can access AMR NB, AMR WB, and additional G.711 alaw and ulaw codecs.
When it comes to streaming capability, MPEG4IP supports RTSP, SDP, and RTP (rfc 3551 for raw audio, 2250 for mpeg1/2 audio and video, 3016 for mpeg4 video, 3119 for mp3, 3640 for aac/celp audio, 3267 for AMR octet-aligned only, 3984 for h.264), as well as mpeg2 transport streams (mpeg2 video, mp3 and ac3 audio), both multicast and streaming. The software also supports http fetch of sdp files.
Additional features include 1/2, double, and full screen video, the ability to change aspect ratio of video, as well as audio conversion for channels and format matching. MPEG4IP also supports IsmaCryp 1.0 specification for local and streaming playback.
The latest release of MPEG4IP includes fixes to sln files and minor changes to mp4v2. Overall, MPEG4IP offers a comprehensive and standards-oriented solution for streaming multimedia.
