MToolsFM enables simple floppy access on Linux and UNIX operating systems.
One of the reasons to choose MToolsFM over other methods of accessing DOS- or Windows-formatted floppies on UNIX-like operating systems is the convenience it offers. Mounting floppy disks can be complicated since not all users are familiar with how UNIX/Linux file-systems work. Most users prefer the recognizable "a:" format. Additionally, ejecting a floppy without unmounting it can lead to data loss, and users often forget to unmount floppy disks when logging out, which can cause difficulties for the next user.
To address these concerns, mtools was created - a collection of programs (mcopy, mdir, mmd, etc.) that work as old DOS-commands with a leading "m" allowing the access of DOS-floppies without the need to mount them. This software usually comes pre-installed in most Linux distributions.
However, mtools still require knowledge of DOS-commands, making it difficult for most Linux-newbies who are unfamiliar with manipulating floppy disks from the command line. This is where MToolsFM comes in, providing a simple and user-friendly interface that utilizes the benefits of mtools without requiring users to learn DOS-commands.
Using MToolsFM is especially convenient for Linux administrators whose systems are used by Windows users for tasks such as browsing the web, emailing, and more. With MToolsFM, these users can access floppies with ease, saving the administrator valuable time.
The latest release of MToolsFM includes several translations such as pt_BR, pt_PT, and nb_NO. Moreover, it fixes several large file-related bugs, and updates autoconf-related code.
