GNOME is an international project which aims to create a complete desktop environment entirely from free software. This includes selecting application software for the desktop, working on the programs which manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management. GNOME is part of the GNU Project and works seamlessly with various Unix-like operating systems, including Linux. It can also be used as part of the Java Desktop System in Solaris. Originally, GNOME stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment, though this acronym is now deprecated. Simplicity, usability, and convenience are some of the core values emphasized by the GNOME team.
