GNOME, a complete desktop environment, is an international project aimed at building a graphical user interface entirely from free software. It includes the creation of software development frameworks, selecting application software for the desktop, and working on the programs which manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management. The GNOME Project is part of the GNU Project and works with various Unix-like operating systems, including Linux and Solaris as part of the Java Desktop System.
The acronym for GNOME originally stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment, but this is now deprecated. Simplicity, usability, and making things "just work" are heavily emphasized in the GNOME project.
