MythTV is a DIY PVR software for home entertainment, offering convenient recording and playback capabilities for live TV shows and movies.
Some key features of MythTV include basic 'live-tv' functionality, the ability to pause, fast forward, and rewind "live" TV. It also supports multiple tuner cards and multiple simultaneous recordings, and a distributed architecture that allows for multiple recording and playback machines on the same network. The software compresses video using rtjpeg or mpeg4, with full support for Hardware MPEG-2 encoder cards.
MythTV also offers support for the hardware MPEG-2 decoder and TV out present on the Hauppauge PVR-350. Additionally, automatic commercial detection/skipping, the ability to grab program information using xmltv, and a fully themeable menu make up some of the software's features.
The television portion allows you to pause, fast-forward, and rewind live Television, install multiple video capture cards, and have multiple servers to record more than one program at a time. You can also have multiple clients, each with a common view of all available programs.
MythTV offers other modules, including MythGallery, MythVideo, MythDVD, MythMusic, MythGame, MythWeather, MythNews, MythBrowser, and MythWeb. MythPhone, a phone and videophone using SIP, is also included.
A new release includes autodiscovery, which reduces manual configuration for new frontends, and storage groups that eliminate the need for LVM/etc. Additionally, support for multiple recordings on one DVB/ATSC multiplex, a couple new plugins, and new deinterlacing/video display options are available.
