Nagios Config is a web-based tool that enables users to configure Nagios 1.x from a user-friendly interface. It offers ease of use and accessibility to manage and customize settings on the application.
The monitoring daemon runs regular checks on hosts and services specified by users, utilizing external "plugins" which give Nagios status information. Once problems are identified, the daemon sends notifications via email, instant message, SMS, among others, to administrative contacts. Web browsers allow easy access to current status information, historical logs and reports.
Some of the impressive features of Nagios are monitoring network services such as SMTP, POP3, HTTP, and PING, monitoring host resources such as processor load, disk, and memory usage, running processes, and log files. It also monitors environmental stats like temperature, besides a simple plugin design, user-defined service checks, the definition of network host hierarchy, and escalation of host and service notifications to different contact groups.
With Nagios, you get the ability to define event handlers as a proactive troubleshooting measure during service or host events, support in implementing redundant and distributed monitoring servers, an external command interface, retention of host and service status across program restarts, scheduled downtime for suppressing notifications during planned outages, acknowledgement of problems via the web interface, and access to view the current network status, notification and problem history, log files, and more.
In the latest release of Nagios, some issues have been resolved. A require_once() statement in cleardb_import.php has been fixed, the homepage has been redesigned for more efficiency, and an issue was resolved in the services_A1.php page.
The simple authorization scheme allows users to restrict what other users can view or do from the web interface. In summary, Nagios Config is an excellent software for configuring Nagios 1.x, with impressive features to monitor networks and servers, detect problems, and notify administrators instantly via multiple notification channels.
