Ncat is a new version of the Netcat software family, aiming to merge and update the existing fragmented and poorly maintained implementations.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of Ncat is its wealth of features. This program combines the familiar options of its Netcat predecessors, along with ideas from other networking tools like CryptCat, SOcat, and GNU Netcat. Features like "Connection Brokering," TCP/UDP redirection, SOCKS4 support, and "chaining" multiple instances of Ncat are just a few examples of what this software can do. And with support for SSL connections, IPv6 addresses, and proxy server chaining, Ncat truly has it all.
What's especially impressive is that Ncat manages to accomplish all this without sacrificing usability. Rather than implementing a whole new set of options, the developers have retained the same clean, straightforward layout as the original Netcat product. As a result, you can easily access Ncat's many features without needing to learn a brand new interface.
It's worth noting that some features from the original Netcat have been removed in Ncat. Specifically, port scanning support has been axed, but with good reason: there are already better standalone port scanners on the market. In its place, Ncat has prioritized more advanced features like SSL support, IPv6 compatibility, and its unique "Connection Brokering" option.
Under the hood, Ncat utilizes a variety of standards like IPv4, IPv6, TCP, and UDP. There's also built-in support for SSL connections, and the Connection Brokering feature makes it easier than ever for previously incompatible hosts to connect with one another. All in all, Ncat is an excellent networking utility that packs a ton of functionality while maintaining ease of use. Highly recommended!
