Network Tracker is a daemon software that tracks user MAC addresses in big LANs, specifically designed for campus environments.
In addition, Network Tracker checks devices using both ping and SNMP to ensure devices are functioning correctly, sending self-check emails twice a day. If a device isn't functioning correctly, you'll receive an email alerting you to the issue.
Network Tracker also makes it easy to produce reports regarding your network infrastructure, whether on the web or using other tools. By using this software, you can easily find and shut down switch ports when a PC connected to your network starts to spread viruses or worms, to prevent harm to your network.
Some key features of Network Tracker include collecting all MAC addresses and port numbers from the Content Addressable Memory (CAM) tables of the switches, finding IP addresses of those MACs from the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) tables of the routers, and finding LDAP uid of the user.
The newest version of Network Tracker is now multi-threaded, with each network device having a new thread created for it, which improves speed. The MAC tracking code has also been reimplemented for multi-threaded use, with wireless access point support added. Finally, gnuplot graphics have been prepared to show the active number of users like MRTG graphs, and the tracker now accepts MAC addresses in free format. Overall, Network Tracker is a must-have for anyone looking for a comprehensive user tracker daemon for big LANs.
