The OpenVPN plugin for NetworkManager enables users to easily and securely connect to OpenVPN networks using the NetworkManager graphical interface. This plugin simplifies the setup process and provides additional features including support for advanced authentication methods and automatic DNS configuration.
Installation was fairly simple, requiring the user to navigate to the source code directory and type "./configure" to configure the package for their system. The user may encounter some difficulties when running the configuration on an old version of System V using "csh", in which case they should type "sh ./configure" to prevent "csh" from executing the configuration on its own.
While running, the configuration will print messages detailing which features it is checking for, which may take some time. Once completed, the user should proceed to type "make" to compile the package. If desired, the user may also run any self-tests that come with the package by typing "make check".
Next, the user should type "make install" to install the program and any accompanying data files and documentation. To clean out the program binaries and object files from the source code directory, the user should type "make clean". This step can also be combined with the removal of the files that "configure" created (so another package can be compiled for a different computer) by typing "make distclean".
For developers of the package, there is also a "make maintainer-clean" target, although this option is not recommended for general users. Overall, NetworkManager-openvpn provides a simple and straightforward installation process that effectively incorporates OpenVPN support within NetworkManager.
